Cartographics color the way we see the world when we get there.

A bit of in-progress work for a travel project— a bit of an arts and culture map via watercolor. I find it sweet and endearing. But then I would; I've been working on it for two weeks, and have become rather attached. Can't explain it in full, as it's for a small audience, but I… Continue reading Cartographics color the way we see the world when we get there.

The kids love to karaoke

On a Friday night in Red Hook, a delightful reunion of friends over a swell dinner and lots of singing. (I don't sing at karaoke, but I sure love listening and drawing.)

Saturday Sausage Party: a sketch in three phases

Here's a sketch I did on the weekend; the view from a corner table. There was no place to sit at the bar, and the whole length of it was occupied by men. hence the snarky little title in the upper left. This is perhaps a 15-20 minute sketch done directly in ink. Last evening… Continue reading Saturday Sausage Party: a sketch in three phases

Drawing people and feeding sea birds

Another half day spent at the beach, and two more people added to the sketchbook. I also made a silly little movie of sea birds —fluttering, fighting, and diving as they do— posted on Instagram. The drawings before adding the sky and joined them into one scene:

1 week : 100 people [day three]

Well I nearly made it to 42 yesterday, on the ferry and at the beach. I'm only posting one spread today, as there is more work to be done on the rest of them. Some watercolor and inking, probably. Stay tuned for more!

1 week : 100 people [day two]

I'm behind where I ought to be; only 23 people after two days. Yesterday I slowed down, took my time. As I did, I wanted it to be about quality over quantity— yet the challenge itself is all about quantity! I will endeavor to catch up, and in the meantime hone my skills; try to… Continue reading 1 week : 100 people [day two]

These are people observed at bars over several weeks

More from the sketchbook with the paper I'm not keen to work on. The book is finished (enough). Here are the last few that were decent enough to post (even if marginally). Some work with a brush pen here, but those things require a light touch, so I need to work on that.

These are people riding the A, D, and F trains

I only posted photographs while I was on vacation, but that doesn't mean I haven't been sketching. I've been really trying to finish up this sketchbook, which has crap paper so I can get back to a Moleskine, haha. Anyway, some of these needed some color; some needed tightening up. I just haven't had time… Continue reading These are people riding the A, D, and F trains

A day out on the bike to sketch

Took my bike out yesterday afternoon for some riding around on the waterfront in Brooklyn— first to Brooklyn Bridge Park to view the new little marina at Pier six. Below is a pic of the piece pre-inking, and a snapshot of the view from where I sat (after the sailboat in the drawing had gone).… Continue reading A day out on the bike to sketch
