Color shift, mood shift

The wind in the trees at night in October sounds like all the silent wishes of dreams, rushing to be first in line.

On a crisp fall afternoon, abandon practical pursuits

A Monday broke sunny and fine in October. Distractions around post-debate night in what must be one of the most absurd political races in modernity. Not a good day for 'deep focus' or productivity. Abandon practical pursuits. Walk.

celestial bodies

The point of departure here was the 30 circles exercise, but I'm not much of a one for following rules so I made them all different sizes and then it became all about the composition of the circles and ultimately turned into a kindof gravitational meditation in pencil. And then I went full Dr Seuss on that… Continue reading celestial bodies

the lake is blue, the forest watchful

"every detail clear, tin cup and rippled mirror. The day is bright and songless" —from Morning in the Burned House, by Margaret Atwood Spent two days camping upstate midweek, and the first day was clear and beautiful, temperate.

A little reminder at the end of Summer

A table restoration project | Process

A few weeks ago, as I mentioned in this post, I found a discarded table around the corner from my apartment. It's a gaming table to boot, as the top flips over and the obverse is felt-lined.… Continue reading A table restoration project | Process

Drawings from the moleskine

Bars are always good for studying human nature, at its best or worst (and all the in-betweens). Poor TL, Thursday evening. When I stopped in, she was dealing with a lot of douche-baggery— I hope they tipped her well to make up for that guy whose card wouldn't go through, yet  insisted on putting up a… Continue reading Drawings from the moleskine

A dilemma, revisited

After a week of percolating and indecision, an idea for this table hatched and I began the work (unironically) on labor day. I've stripped the top surface and all four legs, and have a plan to create a backgammon pattern on the top. Having seen how beautiful the wood beneath the old finish is, I've elected to leave… Continue reading A dilemma, revisited

September

Waning of summer month, end of beach weather month. Back to work and back to school month. Memory— no A pattern, died in the wool. Buckled-up books, backpacks, cardigans. Skirts and stockings and closed-up shoes that suddenly feel too tight. Early rising, hasty breakfasting— Tie your shoes and Don’t forget your lunch and The bus… Continue reading September
