A Rite of Spring

(detail of the drawing)

Exsanguination No.1 : A ritual bloodletting. A symbolic sacrifice to speed Winter on its intemperate way and make room for the upset of a new season; of change. Nature’s not kind nor gentle— why should art be?

An aim to establish some schedule

bit of old map and sketches

Three weeks into the new year's January. Best of intentions, and all that, but work has been steady and hard-hitting for the dead of Winter, and so I've not yet established a schedule with which to be more timely or consistent on this blog (something I'm interested in doing). I think the best way to… Continue reading An aim to establish some schedule

Sketches from last weekend, &c.

A couple of offerings from the Moleskine that turned out decently from last weekend. Also, a photo of my European-trip-inspired shadow box sporting a Parisian pigeon feather, a lens from a vintage vision-test optics machine, and a bit of dried flora plucked from Flevopark in Amsterdam on the day we cycled to the Distilleerderij ‘t Nieuwe Diep, sadly… Continue reading Sketches from last weekend, &c.

Some sketches from ‘Papa Day’

S.P. looking quite relaxed after a cozy dinner in his delightful apartment in Manhattan. The metal dachshund sculpture with one of the vintage Chinoiserie lamps; metal dog invoking S.P's Helen, now departed. B. dee-jaying on the laptop; S.P. chillin' And, from a couple nights ago, some additional drawings that landed in the Moleskine book.

Drawings from the Moleskine

Just a quick post to share some new little drawings. The Moleskine from the trip to Europe got filled up within a day or two after I returned, so I bought a new one a couple of weeks ago. The watercolor drawing up there was from our trip to the cabin in NJ. The drawings below… Continue reading Drawings from the Moleskine

Some Moleskine sketches from recent weeks

Such a pleasure to step back and people-watch. Divine. Good sketching, there, being invisible— the only way. Momentary moments and dead give-aways; anthropology. (Aside, it appears there's some red ink on my scanner bed— same place each scan. Note to self: time to razor and windex the scanner glass.) More sketchy sketches after the jump.>>… Continue reading Some Moleskine sketches from recent weeks

sketchy do-dads from the moleskine

A nicely rounded decrescendo of humans absorbed in devices, drinks and perhaps conversation. Clearly not all the people, but a handful to represent the lot. Their gradual rotation puts me in mind just a little of Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase— motion implied in a still (though miles more primitive in this case). Another even sketchier sketch after… Continue reading sketchy do-dads from the moleskine

Man with a mustache

Well this one turned out better, though my markers are running out at this point. Due for a visit to Blick. His face is rather less long and narrow than in the tintype I referenced, and his body slightly more awkward; diminished— but I like the effect. He looks terrifically in earnest. (I realized part… Continue reading Man with a mustache
