Some hasty little watercolor sketches

Put the new set of watercolors to the test last night. Silly stuff; most of these began with lips as the point of departure. Result: a fair amount of drag, androgyny. (For some reason the two on the right turned out looking or seeming very like Fred Armisen.)

A Book of Children’s Rhymes: illustrations

While in Baltimore last month, I went to Ellicott City, a little old mill town which is now is known for being quaint; antiques shops and cafes. I found (and bought) a children's book from the 1970s, one which I quickly realized I'd had as a child. It's one of the books that taught me… Continue reading A Book of Children’s Rhymes: illustrations

City people in watercolor

It's been awhile since I posted. I haven't been drawing much lately— partly on account of work things and partly on account of the weather being too lovely to not be outside walking, cycling, or sitting in the park with friends. These little vignettes are beginnings for a larger work that I'm illustrating for a client.… Continue reading City people in watercolor

Sincerest form of flattery*

You may recall this poster I designed, which I posted here on April 20th. Well, I went to the party in question yesterday to watch the Derby, and Ray, who commissioned the poster mentioned that I ought to page through the current Time Out New York, as there was an ad for the Royalton which bore… Continue reading Sincerest form of flattery*

Design: Derby Day posters

Here is the poster design / illustration I created for this year's Derby Party at Commonwealth bar in Brooklyn. Ray (the proprietor) has commissioned me a number of times for these; he started having these parties at the Great Lakes bar years ago. This year's design combines qualities of my two favorite posters from previous… Continue reading Design: Derby Day posters

A Rite of Spring

(detail of the drawing)

Exsanguination No.1 : A ritual bloodletting. A symbolic sacrifice to speed Winter on its intemperate way and make room for the upset of a new season; of change. Nature’s not kind nor gentle— why should art be?

Skating on a frozen canal— a poster design

Luff gigposter

A poster commissioned by Luff for their upcoming show at Union Hall in Brooklyn. They wanted something wintry yet warm, and though at first I was thinking of ice boats, my mind quickly jumped to the thought of ice skating on canals— so naturally I decided on an image of Amsterdam. I made both a daytime and nighttime version.

An illustrated book acquired on my travels

“Anbetung des Korsetts” Or, Adoration of the Corset, by Bele Bachem and Wolfgang Ebert. I found this at a book seller's stall in a little market in Amsterdam near Nieuwmarkt. Zac and I each found several books there, and a lot of vintage postcards. It's a German book, published in 1961, and the illustrations are fantastic. They remind… Continue reading An illustrated book acquired on my travels

Photos from owners of the 2015 Zodiac calendars

Back in September I completed a successful 30-day Kickstarter campaign to fund a 2015 card-calendar based on the signs of the Zodiac, re-imagined as heraldic house sigils (think Game of Thrones). I've received some lovely photos of the calendars in situ from some of my generous backers. Magnets are a great way to display each month,… Continue reading Photos from owners of the 2015 Zodiac calendars

A new web site for Electrofork!

I've been working on a new portfolio site for about a month now, and it's completed at last! It's got larger images and a much better system of navigation, and has a responsive layout so will look lovely on all the devices. I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT! Go check it out here. Click all the… Continue reading A new web site for Electrofork!
