Cartography of the subconscious

When I woke I discovered my heart cast shadows longer than dreams in places where we moved as children, cured of fear, and never looked back. Sometimes when I wake I write down my dreams, or the bits I can remember. If I wake with the territory intact, I map it. The drawings are invariably simple, as… Continue reading Cartography of the subconscious

Sad days ahead

The one who’s been the most present for over four years has gone. Left in a car packed with all he owns on a bright cold Sunday, December. Left a scar. We walked around the neighborhood late last night lamenting the change. Still almost not understanding or accepting— but a dawning sense. Still to come—… Continue reading Sad days ahead

the Grotesques

I was at a friend's house the other night who owns one of a series of paintings I did in '05. I haven't done a proper painting in a couple of years, and looking at it, I wondered why. These paintings were all fleshed-out from sketches I'd done in many sketchbooks over the course of a couple… Continue reading the Grotesques

Art Archive: sunflowers in silhouette

Art Archive, 2007: compressed charcoal drawing of some of the sunflowers that were growing on the ledge outside my kitchen window.

Art Archive: sketch montage

An archive image for today: here's a montage of various sketchbook drawings. This was a page in my 2004 calendar, which featured all sorts of photos, designs, drawings, and writing from over a few years' time.

Art Archive: the dead guy

When I was in high school I invented a couple of characters by way of drawings. This one's the dead guy. Rather medieval with his fishmail tights and pointy knight's feet. I've no recollection as to his provenance— maybe just a manifestation of sullen teen-ness and an appreciation of Edward Gorey, dark imagery, &c.

Art Archive : photo collages

Here are some photo collages I did in 2000-2001. Three of these feature my old pond comet, the mighty Serial Fish, frolicking amongst my belongings, and swimming through the cathedral of floating forks. Serial was a rescue fish in the sense that I bought him out of the tank of feeder fish. I had him… Continue reading Art Archive : photo collages

A Sunday afternoon with archives

As my travel plans have been postponed briefly, I’ve been going through some old backup DVDs in service to filling some holes in my ART ARCHIVE. It’s an unwieldy thing, a work in progress. The optical drive will likely go the way of cassette players and VCRs, so better to get this shit consolidated. I'll be posting old… Continue reading A Sunday afternoon with archives

On Editing

This is what editing looked like yesterday. I’ve been in a frenzy of eliminating items from my apartment; going through boxes, drawers, shelves— anything that no longer makes the cut is out. Trash, recycle or donate. Two of the friends I met up with last night said they'd been doing the same thing this weekend; how… Continue reading On Editing
