A Rite of Spring

(detail of the drawing)

Exsanguination No.1 : A ritual bloodletting. A symbolic sacrifice to speed Winter on its intemperate way and make room for the upset of a new season; of change. Nature’s not kind nor gentle— why should art be?

On Writing, Part II— Writing is not just for writers

Writing is one of the best ways to sort real emotions from troublesome nonsense. I first experienced this via The Artist’s Way, and what the author calls Morning Pages. After a few weeks, your notebook is transformed— it's a spiral-bound bullshit detector; a college-ruled catharsis.

Sketchbook monarchs

A couple of rather messy sketches from a few of nights ago. Just nonsense, but I like them.

Some test photos taken with a new camera

(photo of a candle)

When I was traveling in September, I did a very careless thing and dropped my camera (a Canon Powershot ELPH 130) on the ground in Paris— it was on and the thing landed smack on the edge of the lens. I think the best way to… Continue reading An aim to establish some schedule

Skating on a frozen canal— a poster design

Luff gigposter

A poster commissioned by Luff for their upcoming show at Union Hall in Brooklyn. They wanted something wintry yet warm, and though at first I was thinking of ice boats, my mind quickly jumped to the thought of ice skating on canals— so naturally I decided on an image of Amsterdam. I made both a daytime and nighttime version.

An illustrated book acquired on my travels

“Anbetung des Korsetts” Or, Adoration of the Corset, by Bele Bachem and Wolfgang Ebert. I found this at a book seller's stall in a little market in Amsterdam near Nieuwmarkt. Zac and I each found several books there, and a lot of vintage postcards. It's a German book, published in 1961, and the illustrations are fantastic. They remind… Continue reading An illustrated book acquired on my travels
