catenary

1 : the curve assumed by a cord of uniform density and cross section that is perfectly flexible but not capable of being stretched and that hangs freely from two fixed points
2 : something in the form of a catenary

This word hasn’t much relevance here; it’s just been in my head because it appeared many times in Winter’s Tale (bridges having been a major plot component)– like tuckamore in The Shipping News. Fine words, both– the simplicity that comes of having specific interpretation; a clarity of purpose lending itself to elegant metaphor. Here’s something funny, though: the spell check in Word Press recognizes neither word (dotted red lines beneath in edit mode!)
