bits and bobs (and buttons!)

I started re-reading Coraline, by Neil Gaiman, last night (nearly finished), on account of all the hoopla about the animated film on its way. It really is a great story– so many bits of sparkle and sharp points writing. I'm sure the film will be impressive, but I can't help wishing that the "look" of… Continue reading bits and bobs (and buttons!)

A Sunday wander

Saturday was Anders' big 4-0 celebration, with folks in from out of town and much revelry. A large night. Sunday brought a mild sunny day and it was tailor-made for wandering. Ben, Merci Green and I walked through Fort Greene and into Williamsburg; stopped for a beer or two at the Brooklyn Brewery, then continued… Continue reading A Sunday wander

Navy Yard

A stoic water tower upon rampart on the roof of building 3 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Windpower on the roof of a new LEED building in the Navy Yard. Snow in Fort Greene Park. Yesterday I went to the Brooklyn Navy Yard to shoot some photos for a client. These were some incidentals shots,… Continue reading Navy Yard

beet juice

Last night we made chicken breasts, kasha, and roasted beets from scratch. The beets take 45 minutes in the oven, but when they're done the skins just slide off and they are good. The 1/4" of water in the bottom of the pan is an impossible red color, and results in a very beautiful pink… Continue reading beet juice

In Search of Life

fig. 2 : "In Search of Life" I'm beginning with a bang; drawing number two, in addition to having written three pages– on anything!  A digression in which, regarding the digital world, graphic design, and the world as we know it, led me to my own Toft-like ruminations, to wit (an excerpt): So much is… Continue reading In Search of Life

the nummulite

In a discussion about the late (great) John Updike, Ben told me that the author was a firm believer in writing "three pages a day"– of anything. This is perfectly sensible, and sounds so simple. It speaks to the notion of keeping one's instrument in fine-tune; in a word: chops. What I've been missing from… Continue reading the nummulite

winterlight

fig. 1: (above) A grouping of two images from the Sunday walk in Prospect Park: Dr Seussian grasses of towering puffs on gaunt, weather-weary reeds; the sun's diffusion over softening ice on the lake. fig. 2: (above) a section of the view out my window, with fresh snow silvering the trees. fig. 3: (above) un… Continue reading winterlight

water soluble

Floodwaters rising. I was among others, and I was on some sort of mission; I was preparing for something, and trying to locate what I'd lost among the water pooling around our feet. I didn't set out to write it down immediately, though, so the rest of the dream has been lost. Sunday Ben and… Continue reading water soluble
